Small Business Marketing

Small business marketing isn't difficult but it can be time-consuming. Most people can't afford Madison Avenue representation, so that means they need to be a bit creative when it comes to small business marketing. There are excellent resources on both the Web and in published book form to help you with your small business marketing needs.

Some of the main areas to consider when it comes to small business marketing are publicity and advertising. Again, not everyone can afford to hire a publicist to do their work in spreading the word about a business but any publicity you get doesn't cost you money out of pocket. This form of small business marketing however does cost time. But if you can get articles in trade publications or other magazines and newspapers as a result, then it's time well spent. If you don't have a background in both journalism and sales, it's best to look into hiring a writing firm. The firm you pick to do items such as press releases should know how to write for the media because newspapers and magazines don't want a sales pitch. They want news. So you need someone who can take your small business marketing plans and turn them into news for you.

The same is true of advertising. Your small business marketing plan must place advertising in the correct market. That means understanding who your customers are, why they buy and centering any paid placements in those proper areas. For example, if you're a gun shop owner buying a banner ad on a site about parenting, it isn't going to have as much pull as a site about firearms. Know your market. Even if the ad at the parenting site costs less, it's wasted money because many parents might not like the idea of having a gun in the house. But even for those moms and dads who don't mind a gun around, you still have a greater chance of more sales at the firearms because gun aficionados are your core customers.

Small business marketing just takes time to analyze what you are offering and finding that market that you can appeal to for sales.
