Domain Resources

Everything you need to know about domains.

Choosing domain names can be an overwhelming task, especially for first-timers. When you register a domain name, you have to keep in mind that the whole process is like leasing real estate, but on the web. Learn how you can own a piece of the Internet world by choosing a good domain name for yourself or your business.

Of course, just like the real estate industry, you need to pay rent. With domain names, you will be paying a yearly fee set by a company called "registrars". To ensure you are legally "leasing" a domain name, check out the Internic list of registrars, which are accredited by ICANN.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, simply known as ICANN, is a non-profit organization that ensures your unique domain name will match with the proper IP address from your hosting provider. This way, your website's content will not get lost deep in cyberspace.

Just like International real estate federations, ICANN works to ensure that all its members (domain owners) are safe from problems about domain registrations. As such, ICANN operates the InterNIC website to allow domain holders and everyone else to search for domain name records, find contact details of registrars, determine if a registrar is accredited by ICANN, file complaints against registrars and report an inaccurate "whois" information.

Both organizations help in choosing domain names more easily. Once you have chosen the right ICANN-accredited registrar, you search for a unique domain name for yourself, decide on a top-level domain extension (such as .com, .net or .org), pay for hosting and develop your site's content. Then, it is ICANN's job to ensure that all your visitors from any part of the world will have access to your website and its contents simply by typing your unique domain name into their web browser.

Are you ready to be part of the World Wide Web? Whether you want to become successful or famous, all you need to do is choose a domain name, register it with web hosting and be one-step away from your goals.
