InterNIC

What is InterNIC?

InterNIC- the abbreviated form of Internet Network Information Center — denotes an Internet service that is registered with the U.S. Department of Commerce. Presently, it is not an active entity and is a website for information concerning domain name registration.

Earlier the InterNIC was entrusted with the governance of the Internet. It was formed as a collaborative agency of Network Solutions and AT&T, with the cooperation of the National Science Foundation. From 1993 till 1998, the InterNIC was responsible for managing the IP address and domain name allocation. Now, most of the functions are carried out by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

Formerly, the management functions were performed by the NIC (Network Information Center) and then Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) carried out most of the management related issues. It is in the year 1993, that InterNIC was created to manage the domain name and IP address assignments. At that time, the InterNIC provided a number of internet related services such as registration services, net scout services, InterNIC directory and database services, and support services including information services, outreach, and education. InterNIC directory and database services were operated under the control of AT&T.

You can access information about registrars, Whois, and FAQs in the InterNIC website http://www.internic.net. The website also shows the list of accredited registrars, where you can search for your favorite registrars by location or by language that are supported by the registrar. Within the website itself, a domain name search tool (Whois Search) is provided that checks the availability of your chosen domain. You can also search for registrar and name server in this Whois search tool. The website carries helpful hints for solving all customer complaints and disputes related to domain name transfer, unsolicited renewal and unauthorized transfer of domains, content of a website, SPAM or computer viruses, registrar service disputes, financial transaction disputes, and issues concerning IP address, and more. Moreover, provisions to report incorrect or incomplete Whois data and listing are also offered in the InterNIC website.
