Sub-domains

Information on sub-domains.

A part of larger domains, the sub-domains are domains within domains or third level domains. They have a distinctive identifier which distinguishes them. For example in the address http://music.yahoo.com, 'music.yahoo.com' is the sub-domain under the larger domain www.yahoo.com. Usually sub-domains do not have the 'WWW' prefix.

A sub-domain helps to form an attractive web address. Moreover, these sub-domain names can specifically point to a particular sub directory in your web hosting account. Your web host can easily set up sub-domains for you; separate registration is not required. If the hosting service allows it, you can easily create them yourself through your control panel. In case your host does not offer sub-domains, you can check with free domain offering services. Usually such services provide you with free sub-domains that redirect the user to your website. In return they will place their advertisements on your site. Sub-domains are separate websites, existing as different units from the main domain web site.

As far as search engines are concerned, they do not distinguish between regular domains and sub-domains. Sub domains will have to be optimized and developed just as you would a regular domain. A well optimized sub domain is sure to bring you more visitors and earn you a higher rank in search engine listings. An entity which is a part or subsidiary of a larger organization will benefit by having sub domains. In this case you can secure a sub-domain in the domain of the organization and thereby avoid the registration fee. At the same time your organization will have a unique affiliated address. Large businesses make constructive use of sub-domains for promoting separate products.

Sub-domains are advantageous in that they help you to organize your website into neat sections that are easily accessible. Sub-domain names are easy to remember and so will bring back quality visitors. You can create as many sub-domains as you like. You need not go to a registrar and pay money for each of your sub-domains annually.
