Official Registrars

What are official registrars?

An official registrar is a domain registrar that provides registration services to generic top level domains such as .org, .com, and .net, as well as ccTLDs such as .au, .uk, .in and so on. An organization or company that is authorized to provide domain registration services on the Internet is known as a domain name registrar.

During the registration process, many registrars (an organization or company that acts as a mediator between the registrant and registries) are involved. An official registrars registration service is accredited by ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), which manages the Internet domain name system or by the corresponding government that is responsible for the registration of country code top-level domain name extension (ccTLD). Each ccTLD is administered by an official registry. The registry can also authorize registrars to take care of the registration procedure. In this process, the registrar is not a reseller but supports registry for the registration of domain names. Are you planning to become an official registrar? Then look into getting the membership from ICANN.

The .org, .com and .net domain names were launched as global extensions in 1995. All entities including organizations and individuals from all over the world can register an address with .com, .org and .net domain names since they are unrestricted global top-level domain names. Unrestricted domain names are available on the principle of first-come, first-served basis. VeriSigns COM NET Registry is an authorized registry which is responsible for .com and .net domain names.

The registration information of the customers is maintained and created by a registrar in the WHOIS database. Those expired unrestricted global top level domain names can be temporarily renewed. Once the temporarily renewed domain names are not transferred or renewed within the specified period, they are sent back to redemption period status or pending delete status. According to statistics report, the top ranking domain registrars include Go Daddy, eNom, Network Solutions, Tucows, Melbourne IT, Schlund+Partner, Register.com, Wild West Domains, Moniker Online Services, and DomainDoorman.
