.gr Registration

How do you register a .gr domain name?

Searching for information about .gr registration? A .gr extension is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) name for Greece. FORTH is the sponsoring organization in Greece that launched .gr extension service in 1989. The registry which is responsible for registration service is FORTH-ICS or EETT.

To secure a domain name with a .gr extension, you must follow certain rules and procedures of EETT (The Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission). For example, you must register your domain names in alphanumeric characters in both Latin and Greek. Domain name characters may range from three to sixty characters and lower case and upper case characters are treated alike. Additionally, according to the rules, a sole applicant can opt for multiple domains. All companies, freelance professionals and individuals regardless of nationality can adopt domain names with .gr extension.

The following sub domains can be created:

  • .com.gr — commercial entities
  • .edu.gr — educational institutes
  • .net.gr — network providers
  • .org.gr — organizations at large
  • .gov.gr — Government agencies and organizations

For .gr registration, applicants must submit an application in printed or electronic format with all the necessary information for the desired domain name. You can download the template from http://www.gr or http://www.eett.gr. Along with the application, you have to pay the registration fee of twelve Euros and fifty cents to the registrar for registering the domain name in the .gr zone, which is the same amount as that for new registration, the renewal of an activated registration, or transfer of holder's name. The maximum fee for registration is forty four Euros plus applicable taxes. Depending on the registrar, the .gr registration fee normally varies.

Your domain name will be active within three hours from the time of submission. After registering.gr domain names, companies or individuals in Greece can provide relevant, localized information about products and services on the Internet. A business with a .gr domain can create a professional image among local and international customers quickly and efficiently.
