Travel Industry Association of America (TIA) Reports Multi-Billion Dollar Online Industry
Sixty-four million Americans booked online travel arrangements in 2005, according to the TIA.At an average per person expenditure of $1,288, this adds up to more than an $82 billion dollar business opportunity. Travel-related services were the single largest e-commerce category, according to Forrester Research. The TIA notes that the number of web-based bookings tripled between 2004 and 2006. Both Jupiter Research and Forrester Research predict that the online travel segment will grow to over $100 billion by 2010.Strong growth in both online travel agencies (such as Expedia, and Orbitz) and direct travel supplier Websites sales (airlines and hotel chains booking directly via their Webistes, for example) will push revenues toward the $100 billion mark.
